The studio is set in 1.2 acres of gardens which means on nice days the club can venture outside and sketch various views inside the security of the garden.

Halfway through our art session there is time for a rest and to have a drink.

The art sessions are a lot of fun and we play music to suit what we are drawing or painting at the time. For instance when we are focusing on cartoons, drawing characters from the Simpsons or Phineas and Ferb etc we'll play the music from those cartoons to really get us in the mood. It's amazing just how much music helps when you are producing a work of art!

The main purpose of the club is to show children how they can really improve on the level they are at. You don't have to be an amazing artist to join the club, it's all about having fun, learning how to create a picture that stands out and to also mix with other children who perhaps go to different schools. The great thing about art which sets it aside from maths and literacy is there are no right or wrong answers it's all up to you and no one can ever say what you are doing is wrong!

I have worked in schools many times so I have good experience of working with children. Sometimes I might be asked to go into a school to paint a mural, other times I'm asked to do 'Picture signs' which are large signs with wording painted on with pictures all around. I also visit schools to do art demonstrations in class rooms or in the main hall in front of the whole school.  Out of all the things I do in my art career my favourite thing is to show young people how to get better and show them the tricks of the trade that makes their art work look better than you could ever imagine.

One of the best ways to learn how to draw something is to take it very slowly and do it step by step. if you feel that a picture is not going how you would like it's best to correct it straight away. Some children panic at this stage and then unconsciously speed up to try and put it right. The best thing to do is slow down, walk away for 5 minutes, have a drink of water then look at what needs to be done, it really is the best way.

We'll look at drawing many things in an informal way. We will all help each other and not only will you be part of a great club doing what you love doing but you will make friends with other children that have the same interest as you. It may even spark you to thinking about having a career in art in the future.

My wife Alison will be helping in the studio.  Alison studied dressmaking and textiles along with Art and sculpture. More recently she has worked all over the world as a film hair and make up artist specialising in special effects and prosthetics, and has also run various workshops teaching children the art of theatre and film make up techniques. All of these skills she will bring to her workshops.

All your art equipment is included in the price of club membership, paints, brushes, pencils are all supplied. all you have to do is make sure you help clear up and get all the brushes nice and clean again for the next session. we'll allow 15 minutes at the end of the club to get the room straight again but we'll work tidy anyway to keep the work down at the end!
